Profound tragedy for this Connecticut community and this nation. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by these terrible events.
As the White House Press secretary noted, today is not the day to discuss reforming and strengthening this nation’s gun controls and addressing the increasing number of similar violent episodes, but it is an issue that must be discussed and must be addressed.
One of the ways that we can honor the lives of these victims (and previous victims of similar senseless acts of violence) is to discuss and strategize how to make our nation safer and how to do everything we can to help lessen the probability of similar tragedies occurring again. While there is no way to fully safeguard ourselves against such acts of violence, there are changes that can be made to make it less likely and more difficult for person who choose to enact violence.
This will need to be comprehensive, holistic reform. Study and reform of our nation’s gun control policies is an essential part of the solution, but there are likely many more elements to consider in responding to tragedies such as occurred today in order to curb the seemingly growing violent trends.
